In this week's blog, we go over the 5 most important things I think are a must-know before starting your fitness journey. These are tips that I have learned across my years in fitness and ones I believe that are the most beneficial to ensuring a successful start.
1. S.M.A.R.T - Goal Setting
Specific - one big goal and have smaller goals to help you get to that bigger goal. An example of one big goal could be losing 10 pounds in 1 month. The smaller goals will be to set specific days to go to the gym, prepare a meal plan, find other people with similar goals.
Measurable - have a way to track your progress, whether it's written down or on the computer, and partner with a friend to help make sure plans are followed through. Attainable - set realistic goals for yourself - start small, do not push yourself too hard, setbacks are going to happen but keep going.
Rewarding- why are you doing this? to feel better? financially? figure out your "why", Time-bound - set a time for yourself and keep yourself accountable. If the goal is to lose 10 pounds in 1 month then make weekly goals. Then, by the end of the month, after dropping 10 pounds make a goal for the next month and maybe go for 15 pounds in a month. But, do not stress over time constraints because they are made by you so listen to your body and rest when needed.
2. Make A Plan
Now that you have your goal, how are you going to reach it?
When it comes to being efficient and consistent, your plan has to be something you enjoy, can stick to, and understand your why. Consistency is the name of the game, and there is no perfect training style, diet, cardio regiment, etc. Don't let anyone make you think otherwise; everyone is different, and everyone can reach their goals with different methods.
3. Progression
Make a goal but don't go full steam ahead with it; take baby steps, be patient, and give your body time to adjust to the changes. Track your progress and be prepared to find healthy foods, get into the habit of meal prepping, and write down your workout for the week.
4. Be Prepared
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
The easiest thing you can do to stay prepared, especially with your diet, is cooking in bulk/meal prep. Cook things like vegetables, protein, carbs all in one go. This was you can portion out all your meals to wherever you need (work, school, to run errands, etc.) If you have the meals ready, it's much harder to skip out on your goals and stop by that local McDonalds.
When it comes to training, make sure to plan out your workout beforehand. This way you know exactly where to go, what to do, how much to do for each exercise. This will save you tons of time and mental strain.
5. Support System
Find a good support system, join a workout class, find social media groups that have the same goal as you, and surround yourself with people who help and uplift you. Good Luck!
